This year’s Staff Development Calendar offers staff a variety of choices for ongoing professional development throughout the school year. Both district and site-based trainings are included for your selection. As you know, 3 days of staff development (formerly buy-back) are available. If you choose to attend, 12 district workshop hours is one unit on the Salary Schedule and a cumulative total of 6 hours is equivalent to one day of staff development. Staff members are paid at a per diem rate for attending. Please note that the MacMillan/McGraw-Hill and CPR/First Aid will be held in Schaefer Room 24. All trainings offered in the Technology Series will be held in various Computer Labs throughout the district. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.
MacMillian Mc Graw-Hill Science Implementation Series (7)
- Friday, August 15th - Jack London Classrooms (TBA) This workshop will provide an overview including philosophy, program goals, organization, lesson planning, foldable activities, components, and assessments in the newly adopted K-6 Macmillan/McGrawHill science, and support teachers in a smooth and simple implementation into classrooms.

Technologies & Internet Resources This workshop provides teachers with hands-on
training of the California Science Technology Resources including science magazines and
national science educational Internet sites.

English Learner Instruction and Science
This workshop will present strategies and lesson modifications designed to enhance performance of second language learners.

Teaching Science: Whole Group Activities
Teachers will examine how to use whole group instruction to meet a wide variety of needs in the classroom. Topics will include Maximizing Whole Group Instruction, Asking the Right Questions, Sequencing Activities, and Reading Student Work.

Science and Literacy: A Perfect Match
This workshop will discuss how Macmillan/McGraw-Hill California Science may be used to provide content-area reading strategies, vocabulary strategies, graphic organizers, and writing rubrics.

Primary Science: The Thematic Connection
In this workshop teachers will explore the numerous ways Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Science can be used to develop concepts through thematic activities.

This workshop will provide staff with file management strategies including backing up files, saving to folders, storing on the server, installing new software programs, recovering lost files, virus protection, and setting up jpegs for digital cameras.

Golf at the Elementary Level (GEL) –
This workshop will provide staff with an overview of the G.E.L. program. Participants will learn how to improve students’ abilities to focus, recall and retain information by teaching golf skills including grip, alignment, aim, and swing of a golf club.

CPR/First Aid – Schaefer Room 24
These workshops follow the American Heart Association guidelines for training and certification in CPR and First Aid. Several sessions will be offered and priority will be given to staff members needing to certify in either or both areas. Site-Based Workshops
These workshops are site-based to be determined for dates and times. Participants can earn up to 6 hours of site-based training during the school year.
Additional Staff Development/Professional Growth Hours will be updated as needed.
