Title I Reading

Title I is a federally funded program that is designed to improve the academic achievement of disadvantaged students.  The purpose of the program is to compensate for the educational needs that can accompany poverty.  The district receives funding based on the poverty index.  Funding is used to provide extra assistance to students in coordination with and in support of the regular education program.  Eligibility is based solely on educational need.

Title I Programs in the district are provided at Olivet, Jack London, Piner, and Schaefer Schools.  The programs provide academic assistance to low achieving students in grades K-6.  The goal of the program is to ensure that students can meet District’s Benchmarks in English language arts and math.  Instruction is focused on assisting identified students in meeting the State’s academic standards and is provided to students by Title I teachers who are required to be highly qualified professionals.

Students qualify for the Title I program based on multiple measures including teacher recommendation, District’s Benchmarks, STAR - CST results, and risk level of meeting academic progress.  Teachers monitor ongoing progress for all identified students.  If a student demonstrates proficient levels of achievement on state assessments, Title I support is no longer continued.
